Publication Studio is an experiment in sustainable publication. We print and bind books on demand, creating original work with artists and writers we admire, books that both respond to the conversation of the moment and can endure. We attend to the social life of the book, cultivating a public that cares and is engaged. Publication Studio is a laboratory for publication in its fullest sense — not just the production of books, but the production of a public. This public, which is more than a market, is created through deliberate acts: the circulation of texts; discussions and gatherings in physical space; and the maintenance of a digital commons. Together these construct a space of conversation, a public space, which beckons a public into being.
Publication Studio also offers fee-based services, including: perfect binding, from 20 pp to 500 pp, hot glue bind to soft cover ($15/bind); book trimming, any trim from 1/2″ x 1/2″ to 8 1/2″ x 11″, up to 500 pp ($5/book); larger runs can be bound and trimmed for less (ask about our sliding scale); B/W duplex printing (5 cents/impression) (minimum $5/order); Publication strategies, including social, material, and digital practices (fees negotiable).
Publication Studio was founded and is run by Matthew Stadler, formerly the literary editor of Nest Magazine and co-founder of Clear Cut Press, and Patricia No. It began as a six-month experiment at the University of Oregon’s White Stag facility in February, 2009. A publishing project with musician and printer Phil Elverum, in April, 2009, gave the experiment legs and, in Summer, 2009, the remains of an Instabook III printing and binding machine gave it a body.
