Publication Studio is a maker and destroyer of books. We print and bind books on demand, creating original work with artists and writers we admire. We use any means possible to help writers and artists reach a public: physical books; a digital commons (where anyone can read and annotate our books for free); eBooks; and unique, lavish social events with our writers and artists in many cities. We attend to the social life of the book. Publication Studio is a laboratory for publication in its fullest sense — not just the production of books, but the production of a public. This public, which is more than a market, is created through any and all means — physical production, digital circulation, and social gathering. Together these construct a space of conversation, a public space, which beckons a public into being. In a time of radical change, Publication Studio is a maker and destroyer of books.

Publication Studio was founded and is run by Matthew Stadler, formerly the literary editor of Nest Magazine and co-founder of Clear Cut Press, and Patricia No. Based in Portland, Ore., the studio also visits other cities where we collaborate with like-minded fellow travelers to found “sibling studios” using the same equipment and approach. Each studio contributes books and events to the overall catalog (and can publish and sell books originated by any studio). Currently there are five Publication Studios, in Portland (run by Patricia No and David Knowles), Berkeley, CA (run by Colter Jacobsen), Vancouver, BC, Canada (run by Keith Higgins and Kathy Slade), Toronto, Ontario, Canada (run by Derek McCormack, Alana Wilcox, and Michael Maranda), and the Midwest Radical Culture Corridor, or MRCC—a centerless terrain in the middle of North America across which the studio’s equipment meanders unpredictably (run by Sam Gould and Mike Wolf).

Our books can be bought online (click “store” in the menu to your left) or at any Publication Studio. In addition we sell through bookshops including Pilot Books (Seattle, WA), READ Books at Emily Carr University (Vancouver, BC, Canada), Hennessey and Ingalls (Los Angeles, CA), Third Place Books (Seattle, WA), Utrecht (Tokyo, Japan), ICA bookshop (London, UK), A Estante (Lisbon, Portugal), ProQM (Berlin, Germany), Librairie Yvon Lambert (Paris, France), Buchhandlung Walther König (Cologne, Germany), Monograph Bookwerks (Portland, OR), Dashwood Books (New York, NY), the Whitney Museum Bookstore (New York, NY), the New Museum Bookstore (New York, NY), and many others.

Publication Studio also offers fee-based services, including: perfect binding, from 20 pp to 500 pp, hot glue bind to soft cover ($15/bind); book trimming, any trim from 1/2″ x 1/2″ to 8 1/2″ x 11″, up to 500 pp ($5/book); larger runs can be bound and trimmed for less (ask about our sliding scale); B/W duplex printing (5 cents/impression) (minimum $5/order); Publication strategies, including social, material, and digital practices (fees negotiable).
